World Music - From Ireland
November 15, 7:30 pm

Santa Fe, NM – The Lensic proudly presents the return of Ireland’s Lúnasa, the traditional Irish music ensemble that played to a packed Lensic in 2010. Presented as part of The Lensic’s World Music series, Lúnasa is considered one of the most influential and innovative bands playing Irish instrumental music today. The band is touring the United States on the heels of a sold-out June show at the National Concert Hall in Dublin, where they performed with the Ireland’s RTÉ Concert Orchestra.

Underwriting for this performance is generously provided by Thornburg Investment Management.

Like the newer generation of Nashville musicians who push the boundaries of bluegrass into jazz and beyond, Lúnasa redefines Irish music by going right to the heart of its rhythms. With its distinctive use of the upright acoustic bass (which it teams with other string and wind instruments, including guitar, fiddle, flutes, whistle and pipes), the group seeks out the essential heartbeat of a tune.

“There are lots of great melodies in Irish music but often people don’t hear the rhythms underneath,” says founding member Sean Smyth. “We try to relate the swing or energy out of the music, using new rhythms, letting each instrument add its own unique layer. We’ll play the same tune over and over searching for the groove.” The result is a sound that, though distinctly Irish in flavor, touches on jazz and other improvisational music forms.

Named for the ancient Celtic harvest festival Lughnasadh, Lúnasa was founded in 1997. The band’s current lineup includes founding members Smyth (fiddle and low whistle), Trevor Hutchinson (double bass), and Kevin Crawford (flutes, low whistle, tin whistle), along with newer members Ed Boyd (guitar) and Cillian Vallely (uilleann pipes and low whistles).

Lúnasa’s seventh and most recent album, Lá Nua (New Day), was released in 2010, the same year band members were named “Performers of the Decade” by liveireland.com (a Dublin-based internet radio and TV site). Lúnasa was featured on Natalie Merchant’s 2010 album Leave Your Sleep and has toured and performed with Mary Chapin Carpenter, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Rosanne Cash and Billy Bragg, among others.
