Lensic Performing Arts Center Names New Executive Director

Joel Aalberts, respected leader with 20+ years of experience at performing arts centers around the country, begins tenure in September



Santa Fe, NM –The Lensic Performing Arts Center is pleased to announce the appointment of Joel Aalberts as executive director, following an extensive executive search process led by Arts Consulting Group. He will begin his tenure on or before September 6.

Aalberts comes to The Lensic from the Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) Center for the Arts, a 2,000-seat venue in Richmond, Kentucky, where he has served as executive director since 2013. At EKU, he programmed a 45-show annual performance series, launched new community outreach and youth programs, and substantially increased membership numbers, operational efficiency, and revenues. In 2015 Aalberts was awarded the commission of Kentucky Colonel, the highest title of honor bestowed by the Governor of Kentucky, recognizing individuals for their service and accomplishments on behalf of others.

From 2009 to 2013, Aalberts was the director of the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts, a 1,200-seat restored historic theater in Bloomington, Illinois. There, he oversaw more than 500 events annually and programmed a robust artistic series. From 2006 to 2009, he was the Bloomington Center’s marketing and communications director. In total, Aalberts has more than 22 years of experience at performing arts centers across the country, including those at the Universities of Iowa, Michigan, and Arizona. He is a 1992 University of Iowa graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.

“We couldn’t be more excited about Joel’s imminent arrival,” said Nancy Zeckendorf. “Joel has very impressive leadership skills, along with outstanding arts administration and artistic programming experience. I think he’ll take what we have developed over our first 15 years and expand on it with creative and exciting new ideas.”

Aalberts enjoys performing and has sung with the Tucson Symphony Chorus and Tucson Chamber Artists (now known as the True Conchord Voices and Orchestra). He is also a long-distance runner and has completed 45 marathons.

He will move to Santa Fe in August with his wife, Amy, and their two children. Amy was born and lived in Santa Fe until she was eight. The Aalberts still enjoy many long family friendships in the community.

Aalberts is only the second executive director in the Lensic Performing Arts Center’s history. Robert Martin, who held the position from April 2001 to April 2016, skillfully led The Lensic through its crucial first years as a nonprofit performing arts center and helped establish it as one of Santa Fe’s cultural cornerstones.
