Lensic Presents A Valentine’s Day Big Screen Classic Harold and Maude, February 14, 7PM

Lensic Presents

A Valentine’s Day Big Screen Classic
Harold and Maude

February 14 at 7 p.m. at The Lensic

Santa Fe – The Lensic Performing Arts Center is pleased to present the quirky and unconventional romantic comedy, Harold and Maude, as its annual Valentine’s Day Big Screen Classic. In keeping with tradition, ticket prices are $5, making a night at The Lensic on Valentine’s Day a romantic and affordable evening out.

A commercial flop when released in 1971, Harold and Maude became a cult classic. Now, the film is recognized as a popular favorite. The movie is listed in the American Film Institute’s top ten romantic comedies, along side City Lights, It Happened One Night and When Harry Met Sally.

Harold and Maude was directed by Hal Ashby and stars Bud Cort as the existentially adrift 20-year-old Harold. In an attempt to get attention from his socialite mother, Harold repeatedly fakes his own suicide, to no avail. Having discovered “he likes being dead,” he drives a hearse and attends the funerals of strangers. Ruth Gordon stars as Maude, the free spirit septuagenarian who befriends Harold at a funeral. Through his relationship with Maude, with whom he falls in love, Harold begins to see beyond his obsession with death to the possibilities of life.

The soundtrack of the film, by Cat Stevens, captures the mood and the feeling of the time and the location of the film, the San Francisco Bay Area.

Big Screen Classics are sponsored by Morgan Stanley.
