BIG SCREEN CLASSICS
La Strada

January 23 at 7 p.m. $7

Santa Fe – The Lensic Performing Arts Center presents the 1954 cinematic masterpiece, La Strada, as part of its Big Screen Classics series. The film will be shown in high definition on Saturday, January 23 at 7 p.m. The film is in Italian with English subtitles. The film is 108 minutes in length.

La Strada (The Road) is one of director Federico Fellini’s best films and is considered a classic in both Italian and global cinema. Based in part on Fellini’s personal experiences, the story follows an innocent and simple young girl who is sold to a member of a rag tag traveling circus. La Strada is a transitional film in Italian cinema, a crucial juncture where Fellini split with Italian neorealism – the leading form of post-war film.

The film stars Giulietta Masina as Gelsomina, who is owned and mistreated by the cruel strong man, played by Anthony Quinn. Richard Basehart plays the aerialist and clown who urges Gelsomina to leave her master, without success.

The film won the first Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1956. Lensic Big Screen Classics are generously supported by Morgan Stanley.
