ZUM
Gypsy. Tango. Brilliant.
February 27 at 7 p.m. at The Lensic
Santa Fe – The Lensic Performing Arts Center is proud to present ZUM, a band of five virtuoso musicians exploring the passionate roots of Argentine tango and the brilliance of gypsy fiddle music on the verge of their newest release, ZUM Plays Piazzolla. The album is scheduled for release in the U.S. in February.
ZUM will play at The Lensic on February 27 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15-$30 (discounts apply for Lensic members).
A tribute album to Astor Piazzolla, the great Argentine tango composer and bandoneón player who revolutionized traditional tango music, ZUM Plays Piazzolla is also a concept album, delving deep into Piazzolla’s tango and pushing the boundaries with contemporary grooves, harmonies and jazz effects. ZUM Plays Piazzolla is the band’s fourth album and follows their 2005 release, Inferno, an album that combined the tango nuevo sounds of Piazzolla, music from the golden era of tango and traditional Eastern European gypsy melodies with virtuoso fiddling.
ZUM is Adam Summerhayes (violin), Dave Gordon (piano), Malcolm Creese (bass), Eddie Hession (accordion) and cellist Chris Grist. Since 2001, Adam Summerhayes and David Gordon have created compelling original compositions inspired by gypsy and tango music and spiced with a host of influences from klezmer to jazz to bebop. Far from a chamber concert, ZUM puts on a show that is compelling, original and contemporary.
Reviews for ZUM:
“Intoxicating … virtuoso fiddle playing” – The Times
“Their music is open to a host of influences such as bebop and bluegrass, and combined with their own work, among others, they play the music of the Argentinean master of modern tango, Astor Piazzolla. The outcome is fiery, passionate and intriguingly beautiful.” BBC
“Completely compelling and always original, ZUM produced a performance full of laughter and character, which could not fail to capture the audiences' imagination.” Bury Free Press
