The Outpost Performance Space, The Lensic Performing Arts Center and the Santa Fe Jazz Foundation are proud to announce the Fifth Annual New Mexico Jazz Festival, July 13-25, 2010. This bi-city, collaborative effort between three of the most respected non-profit jazz presenters in the state will feature concerts and events in Albuquerque and Santa Fe by major touring artists as well as respected New Mexico-based jazz, international and Latin music practitioners over an exciting ten-day period.

Opening the Festival at the Outpost Performance Space in Albuquerque is renowned saxophonist, Doug Lawrence and his Quartet featuring legendary jazz drummer, Jimmy Cobb, pianist Llew Matthews and bassist, John Webber (7/15). Outpost also hosts its 17th Annual Raffle Drawing at this concert –– a lucky winner receives a trip for two to the 53rd Annual Monterey Jazz Festival in September. That same evening in Santa Fe at The Lensic Performing Arts Center, the Jazz Festival expands its scope with a concert of modern tap dance by, STEPOLOGY’s “Tap On!” featuring some of the hottest tap artists of today, plus special musical guest, Santa Fe’s own Bert Dalton on piano. Another extra-musical event offered this year is the Jazz Loft Project, a multi media presentation by Sam Stephenson, author of the Jazz Loft Project, a book about photo journalist W. Eugene Smith who took thousands of pictures and recorded thousands of hours of tape featuring jazz greats such as Thelonious Monk, who met to ‘jam’ in his Manhattan loft back in the 1950’s & 60’s. Stephenson will share stories and a slide presentation at venues in Albuquerque and Santa Fe (7/17, Outpost & 7/18,Verve Gallery of Photography). Also in the line-up this year is vocalist, Simone, daughter of musical icon, Nina Simone, in a tribute to her mother’s music, with special opening guest, singer-songwriter, Somi (7/16, Lensic); world renowned Puerto Rican bomba y plena ensemble, Los Pleneros de la 21, who will be in a jazz festival residency for a week (as they return to NM in celebration of their first Outpost-sponsored tour of the state 20 years ago) conducting workshops, outreach activities, and concerts (7/17-24). Also featured is Guggenheim Fellow and MacArthur “Genius” Award Winning Saxophonist from Puerto Rico, Miguel Zenón and his Quintet (7/21 & 22, Outpost; 7/23, Lensic in a shared concert with Los Pleneros de la 21); Bitches Brew Revisited featuring an all-star line-up including Cindy Blackman, Graham Haynes, James Blood Ulmer, Marco Benevento, DJ Logic and more (7/18, Lensic); and NEA Jazz Master Toshiko Akiyoshi with her Quartet featuring Lew Tabackin, and the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra led by Bobby Shew. They will offer an open rehearsal at Outpost (7/24) and will be in concert at The Lensic (7/25), plus there will be a ‘Meet the Artist’ event with retired NEA Deputy Chairman/jazz historian, A.B. Spellman and Ms. Akiyoshi (7/25).

The Festival continues its partnership with the City of Albuquerque to present free concert events throughout the 10-day period including Summerfest in Nob Hill (7/24) featuring Los Pleneros de la 21; Son Como Son, Kanoa Kaluhiwa, Baracutanga, The African Roots of Jazz Project, and much more, and the Old Town New Fun series, which offers free concerts in Albuquerque’s Old Town Plaza (Los Pleneros de la 21 and Cesar Bauvallet’s Tradiciones, 7/17). The partnership with Santa Fe Bandstand/Outside In Summer Series also continues this year and features free concerts on the Santa Fe Plaza (Santa Fe drummer, Dave Wayne’s The Things That Are Heard along with Gypsy Swing of Le Chat Lunatique, 7/13).
