Scaling the Cliffs of Insanity, Battling Rodents of Unusual Size, Facing torture in the Pit of Despair—True love has never been a snap. The Princess Bride has everything a classic tale should—fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love and miracles.
Some memories last forever … Barbara Streisand and Robert Redford star in The Way We Were, a story of two people who have a passionate romance but whose political views drive them apart.
Santa Fe, NM – The Lensic Performing Arts Center is proud to present a Valentine’s Day Big Screen Classics double feature on February 13 and 14. On February 13, the classic fairytale and popular favorite, The Princess Bride, makes its debut at The Lensic. The Way We Were, starring Barbara Streisand and Robert Redford and directed by Sydney Pollack, will be shown on February 14.
The fairy tale, The Princess Bride, is beloved by fans due in part to lines like, “Good luck storming the castle,” and “Mawage. Mawage is wot bwings us togeder tooday,” and a cast of characters including a beautiful princess, an evil prince, a pirate, a giant and a thief. The fairytale begins with a grandfather (Peter Faulk) reading his favorite book,
The Princess Bride, to his hard-to-impress grandson (Fred Savage). This book, he promises, has everything – fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love and miracles – and all that he promised comes to life before the boy’s enchanted eyes as his grandfather reads him the adventures of Buttercup (Robin Wright), the most beautiful woman in the world, and Westley (Cary Elwes), the man she loves.
Directed by Rob Reiner, the film, released in 1987, boasts an impressive cast including Chris Sarandon (Prince Humperdinck), Mandy Patinkin (Inigo Montoya), Christopher Guest (Count Tyrone Rugen), André the Giant ( Fezzik) and Billy Crystal, Carol Kane and Wallace Shawn.
The Lensic also presents The Way We Were as a Valentine’s Day Big Screen Classic. The 1973 film was directed by Sydney Pollack—the screenplay by Arthur Laurents was based on his experiences with the House Un-American committee.
The story follows the difficult romance between Katie (Barbara Streisand), a Jewish political activist and Hubbell (Robert Redford) a carefree writer with no particular political bent. The two first meet in college; they meet again after World War II and marry. The couple creates a life together in California but struggle with the differences in their background and temperament. As the Hollywood blacklist grows, Katie’s political activism eventually threatens Hubbell’s reputation and creates a breaking point in their relationship.
A box office success, the film was nominated for several awards and won the Academy Award for Best Original Dramatic Score and Best Original Song for The Way We Were.
Big Screen Classics are part of the Lensic Presents series, a program of the Lensic Performing Arts Center created to bring diverse, affordable performances to Santa Fe.
